Nut Fitment and Compatibility

A nut is defined by more than its thread. The style determines how it locks, how it spreads load, and what it seats against, and those three things are what make one nut correct where another of the same thread is not. Wheel nuts deserve the most care on this page. They are torque-critical, and many use a shaped seat, conical or spherical, that has to match the seat machined into the rim. A wheel nut with the wrong seat contacts on an edge instead of a face, will not hold torque, and works loose no matter how carefully it was tightened.

Types of Replacement Nuts

Hex nuts are the general-purpose fastener and are usually paired with a washer or a locking method. Jam nuts are thinner and are designed to lock against a second nut or a housing, which is why they appear on adjustable linkages and tie rods rather than on plain joints. Fitting a jam nut where a full-height nut belongs leaves fewer threads engaged than the joint was designed for.

Flange nuts carry an integral washer face that spreads clamp load and resists loosening, and they suit sheet metal and castings where a plain nut would dig in. Acorn nuts cap the thread, keeping dirt and moisture off a stud that would otherwise seize. Nut retainers hold a nut captive where there is no way to get a wrench behind the joint.

Any nut with a nylon insert or a deformed locking thread is a single-use item. It locked the first time by being deformed on the way on, and it will not do that again.
