Snap Ring and Clip Fitment and Compatibility

The first question on any retaining ring is whether it fits inside a bore or around a shaft, because internal and external rings of the same nominal size are different parts and neither will do the other's job. An internal ring expands into a groove cut in a housing; an external ring contracts onto a groove cut in a shaft. Common replacements include the snap rings replacing OEM 7105856, 6694112, 6672266, 7002385, and 6518955, the retainer ring replacing OEM 6534154, the compression ring replacing OEM 7259181, the E-clip replacing OEM 1011779CC, the retainer for excavators replacing OEM 7170703, the drive belt cover clip replacing OEM 6703022, and the clips replacing OEM 6669091, 6675524, and 7178670.

Order these by OEM number rather than by measuring a used one. A ring that has already been removed once has usually been opened further than it should have been, so its measured diameter is no longer the diameter it was made at.

Types of Replacement Clips and Rings

Snap rings and retaining rings hold a bearing, pin, or shaft in position and take the axial load that would otherwise push it out. They are elastic parts, not rigid ones: they work by springing back into a groove. A ring that has been sprung past its limit during removal will sit in the groove looking fitted while holding almost nothing, which is why these are meant to be replaced rather than reused, and why they cost what they cost.

E-clips push on sideways rather than over the end of a shaft, which is what makes them usable where there is no clearance to slide a ring down. Panel and cover clips hold guards, covers, and trim, and they are almost always the reason a cover rattles or sits proud after it has been off once.

Fit rings with the correct pliers. Levering one on with a screwdriver deforms it in exactly the way that stops it holding, and the failure shows up later as a bearing or pin walking out of its bore.
