The R520 occupies the larger frame end of Kubota's legacy 20 Series wheel loader lineup, with more horsepower, more lift capacity, and a heavier operating weight than the smaller R420 sibling. The R520 base machine is the open station ROPS canopy configuration, with the R520S spec variant adding incremental improvements and the cabin variants adding fully enclosed cab and HVAC. Common deployments include heavier landscape construction, agricultural feedlot and dairy operations where the larger bucket capacity matters, snow removal in commercial parking and roadway work, and material handling at gravel pits and small mineral operations. The transition to the current R30 Series replaced the R520 with the R530 and R540, both of which introduced larger cab dimensions and AC standard equipment.

The R520 shares its engine and many service parts with the R420 in the same generation because Kubota built both machines on the same chassis platform with engine displacement and frame size as the primary scale variables. Cab and door glass on the R520 cabin variants are larger than the R420 cabin variants because the larger frame machine had a different cab molding, so cab specific service parts do not interchange between the two model frames despite the shared drivetrain.
