Kubota's wheel loader lineup is the R Series, a family of compact articulated wheel loaders aimed at landscaping, snow removal, agricultural yard work, and light construction. The 20 Series, which includes the R320 / R420 / R420S / R520 / R520S, was Kubota's wheel loader lineup for over a decade and is the most common machine in the field today. These earlier units came with open station ROPS as the standard configuration, with optional canopy and basic enclosed cabs available depending on year and region. The transition to the current 30 Series (R430, R510, R520 (current generation, distinct from legacy R520), R530, R540, R630, R640) brought a wider range of models, true climate controlled cabs as a standard option, and revised hydraulic flow on the larger R530 / R630 / R640 models.

Within the 20 Series, the S suffix on R420S and R520S indicates a spec / region variant of the same base machine. Many service parts that fit a base R420 also fit a R420S because both share the same engine, hydraulic pump, and chassis. Across the 20 to 30 Series transition, the engine families changed (newer Tier 4 emissions and higher displacement on the 30 Series larger machines), so engine specific filters and fuel system parts do not always cross between a 20 Series and a 30 Series machine of similar nominal size. Cab parts and hydraulic filters that are chassis specific are a frequent source of mis order on these machines, so verify the model designation and serial number on the data plate inside the cab door before placing the order.
