Perkins Engine Fitment and Compatibility

Perkins diesels power a long list of machines from other manufacturers, which is why the same Perkins engine can turn up in a Massey Ferguson or Allis-Chalmers tractor, a Hyster or Clark forklift, a JCB loader or a Mustang skid steer. The engine families covered here include the older 3.152, 4.236, 4.248 and 6.354 engines, the 1004 series (1004.4, 1004.4T, 1004.40, 1004.42), the 1006 series (1006.6, 1006.6T) and the compact 903.27. Filters follow the engine, not the machine badge, so a Perkins filter that fits a Massey Ferguson tractor will often fit a forklift or loader running the same engine.

Perkins builds several versions of most engine families, and later builds can change the fuel filter head or the oil filter thread. The engine number on the plate fitted to the cylinder block identifies the exact build. Types of Replacement Filters for Perkins Engines

Fuel filters make up most of this range. Older Perkins engines use a cartridge element in a bowl or a spin-on fuel filter, and many machines also carry an in-line or sediment filter ahead of the lift pump. Water in diesel fuel is the main cause of injector and pump wear on these engines, so fuel filters and water separators are the most frequent service item. Common replacements include the fuel filter cartridge that replaces Massey Ferguson 1802271 and the in-line fuel filter that replaces Bobcat 3885315.

Air filters protect the engine from dust, which matters most on loaders, combines and forklifts that work in dirty conditions. Many Perkins applications use a primary outer element with an inner safety element, and the two are replaced on different schedules. Replace the inner element when the outer element has been changed several times or if the outer element has been damaged. Engine oil filters round out the routine service set.
