Where Is the Engine Serial Number on a John Deere?

The plate collects oil film, road film and paint over time, and it is frequently unreadable until cleaned. Degreaser and a rag will usually bring it back. Where the stamping has worn shallow, a torch held almost flat against the surface throws shadow into the characters and makes them legible when direct light will not.

Photograph it once you have it. On a working machine the plate only gets harder to read, and having the number on your phone saves repeating the job every time you order.

They identify different things and they are not interchangeable. This is the single most common source of wrong engine parts.

What Does a John Deere Engine Serial Number Mean?

The code is structured, and understanding the structure tells you what you are looking at even before decoding anything.

First two letters: the factory. TO indicates Dubuque, CD indicates Saran, PE indicates Torreon, among others
Next four digits: the engine model
Next letter: an emissions code on newer engines, or an aspiration code on older ones
Final six digits: the unique sequential number for that engine

Two points worth drawing out. The factory code identifies where the engine was built, which is frequently not where the machine was assembled, so it tells you nothing about the machine's origin. And the aspiration or emissions character is genuinely useful when ordering, because it distinguishes turbocharged from naturally aspirated variants of the same engine model.

Record the number in full, exactly as stamped. Partial engine serials are a common cause of wrong parts, because the characters people leave off are frequently the ones that separate variants.

Which Parts Are Ordered Against the Engine Serial?

Anything that belongs to the engine rather than to the machine around it.

Filters: engine oil, fuel and air
Gaskets and seals throughout the engine
Injection components, including injectors, pumps and lines
Belts, water pumps, thermostats and cooling parts
Internal engine components of every kind
Turbocharger and related hardware where fitted

What is not ordered against the engine serial is everything else: cab glass, mirrors, wiper hardware, hydraulic components, loader parts and structural items. Those follow the machine PIN.

The dividing line is physical rather than conceptual. If the part would come off with the engine when the engine is lifted out, it belongs to the engine.

How Do I Identify My John Deere Engine Model?

The four digits following the factory code give the engine model, and that is usually enough to identify what you have. If the plate is unreadable, several other routes work.

Count the cylinders and check the displacement marked on the block where present
Look for casting numbers on the block itself, which survive when plates do not
Check the machine documentation, since original paperwork frequently records the engine fitted at build
Work from the fitted components, where filter and belt part numbers already on the machine narrow the possibilities

That last route is worth remembering. If the previous owner left the old filter box, or a part number is written inside the engine door, that number identifies the engine as effectively as the plate would have.

That generational change is the part that matters when ordering, because emissions related updates altered fuel systems, aftertreatment and sometimes filtration between versions of what looks like the same engine.

The emissions character in the serial is what distinguishes them. Two engines with the same four digit model code can differ in that character and take different parts, which is precisely why the full serial is needed rather than the model alone.

What If the Engine Has Been Replaced or Rebuilt?

This is the case that makes the whole distinction matter, and it is far more common than owners of older machines expect.

When an engine is replaced, the machine keeps its original PIN and gains an engine with an unrelated serial. From that point:

The machine PIN is actively misleading for engine parts, since it points at the engine that used to be there
Parts catalogues consulted by machine model will return components for the original engine
The engine plate is the only reliable source of what is actually fitted

Rebuilt engines add a further wrinkle. A rebuild may change internal specifications while the original plate stays in place, so the serial identifies the engine as built rather than as it currently stands. If a machine has been rebuilt, whatever documentation came with that work is worth more than the plate for internal components.

When buying a used machine, check whether the engine serial is consistent with the machine's age. A much newer engine serial on an older machine is not a problem in itself, but it is information worth having before you agree a price.

Work through these in order before concluding it cannot be identified.

Clean thoroughly. Degreaser and a rag recover most plates that look hopeless
Use oblique light. A torch held nearly flat throws shadow into worn stamping
