Look carefully at that table and you will see T appears twice: 1996 and 2026. That is not an error. ISO 3779 defines a 30 year cycle for the model year character, so every code comes around again three decades later. A 1971 JCB and a 2001 JCB carry the same 10th character too.

This is worth stating clearly because it is a common source of confusion. You will find guides describing letters like T, V and W as a "legacy JCB year code system," separate from the modern one. They are not a separate system. They are the same ISO cycle one revolution earlier. Reading them as a proprietary JCB scheme leads people to treat the two ranges as unrelated when they are the same table.

The model number identifies the type of machine. The serial number identifies your specific machine and its exact build.

• Model number: 3CX, 4CX, JS130, or a Loadall designation. It tells you the family and general configuration.
• VIN or serial number: unique to your machine, and the only way to establish its exact build configuration and production position.
• Engine serial: carried separately on the engine. Engine components are often ordered against this rather than the machine VIN.

The gap between them matters because manufacturers revise components mid production without changing the model badge. Two 3CX backhoes wearing identical model designations can take different filters if an engine or emissions revision landed between their build dates. The model number cannot tell you which side of that change you are on.

How Do I Order the Right Parts Using My JCB Serial Number?

Work through it in this order.

1. Record the model designation exactly as it appears on the machine.
2. Record the full VIN or serial, all 17 characters where present. Do not shorten it.
3. Establish the year from position 10 if you have a 17 character VIN, resolving the 30 year ambiguity by machine generation.
4. Record the engine serial separately if you are ordering engine or filtration components.
