Starter Motor Fitment and Compatibility

Starters match to the engine and its flywheel, so the OEM number is the reliable identifier across machine brands sharing an engine family. Common units include the starter that replaces Bobcat OEM 6685190 and the Kubota starters replacing OEM 67980-31153 and 1K012-63013, covering common Kubota diesel families across tractors, loaders, and excavators.

Tooth count on the drive pinion, rotation direction, and mounting flange pattern all follow from the OEM number. Voltage is 12V across this category, and kilowatt rating matters mainly for cold climate starting, where the specified rating exists for a reason.

Types of Replacement Starters

Gear reduction starters dominate modern diesel equipment, spinning a small fast motor through a reduction gear for high cranking torque from a compact body. Direct drive units persist on older engines. Both connect through a heavy battery lead and a solenoid trigger wire, and both fail in the same ways, through worn brushes, a dragging bendix, or a solenoid that clicks without spinning.

Slow cranking on a healthy battery, a single click at the key, or intermittent no-crank that improves when the engine is cold are the classic signs. Checking battery voltage and the ground strap first is free, and rules out the two conditions most often misdiagnosed as a dead starter.
