The KX71-3 sits in the sub 3 ton class of Kubota's legacy 3 Series mini excavator lineup. Two production variants exist under the KX71-3 designation: the base KX71-3 and the KX71-3S Super Series with revised hydraulics and operator station improvements. The cabin (CABIN) variants share the same chassis and drivetrain as the open station base, with the cab adding glass and HVAC components. The platform was eventually replaced by the current 4 Series KX030-4 and KX033-4 in this size class. The KX71-3 was Kubota's high volume sub 3 ton machine in the late 1990s through early 2010s, with a large installed base still in active service across rental fleets, residential contractors, and small utility companies.

Cab glass on the cab equipped variants uses the smaller cab dimensions specific to the KX71-3 and does not interchange with the larger RC411 series glass used on the KX121-3 and KX161-3 cabs.
