Gas Spring Fitment and Compatibility

Gas springs are defined by three things that are not visible side by side: extended length, stroke, and force. Two struts of identical length can carry very different force ratings, and force is what decides whether a door stays up or drifts down. This is why gas springs cannot be matched by measuring alone and should be ordered by OEM number. Common replacements include the door gas springs replacing OEM 7157893, 7142371, and 7414109, the left and right gas springs replacing OEM 7414107 and 7412861, the gas springs replacing OEM 6655965 and 7134709, the door gas spring replacing Case 47710478, the cab and cab tilt gas springs replacing Takeuchi 1653900098, 1653900057, and 1653900060, and the steering tilt gas springs replacing John Deere AT160662 and AT357995.

This page covers a genuinely wide range of machines, with Bobcat, John Deere, Case, Takeuchi, and Komatsu applications all represented, so search by your OEM number rather than assuming a brand is not carried.

Types of Replacement Gas Springs

Door and hood springs hold a panel open against its own weight and are the most frequently replaced. Cab tilt and steering tilt springs assist and hold much heavier assemblies during service. Treat those as a safety item: support the cab or console independently before removing a tilt spring, because the spring may be the only thing holding the weight.

Locking gas springs hold a set position mechanically rather than relying on gas pressure alone, and they are not interchangeable with a standard strut even where the mounting matches.

Gas springs weaken gradually as gas escapes past the internal seal, and cold makes it obvious. A strut that held a door all summer and starts dropping it on the first cold mornings has not suddenly failed; it reached the point where reduced pressure and low temperature together fall below what the door weighs. Where two springs work as a pair, replace both, because a new one beside a tired one carries most of the load and wears out early.
